The Toughest Tests

Advanced Protection shingles underwent a total of 185 individual tests. Here are some of the tests:

1. Hurricane Level Winds — Two of the industry’s toughest wind tests were performed on Advanced Protection Shingles: ASTM D3161, Class F exposed the shingles to 110 mph winds, the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane. On the other hand, ASTM D7158, Class H exposed the shingles to continuous blasts of 150 mph winds, or the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane.

2. Three-Day Rainfall — This involves an extreme rainfall test. The shingles were subjected to 72 hours of simulated rainfall, the equivalent of more than 10 feet of rain.

3. Waterfalls —GAF subjected the simulated roof deck to a 100-gallon deluge.

4. Blast Test — The Advanced Protection shingles were also subjected to a blast test: a 1,000 mph explosive shock wave, or the equivalent of 1,440 pounds per square foot of force. The roof deck survived the test with flying colors.
